How to Road Trip Safely During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Road Trip Safetly During COVID-19 Pandemic - West Point Buick GMC - Houston, TX

Road trips are a great way to escape the daily grind while recharging your mind and spirit. Enjoy the getaway you deserve while keeping your friends and family healthy with these simple strategies to road trip safely during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Go with a Vehicle

Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, each type of transportation has its own health risks, depending on how many people you’re traveling with and how many strangers and places you’re exposed to during the trip. But traveling by car is one of the safer options to pick compared with higher exposure options like bus or plane travel.

Pick a Smart Destination

If traveling within the U.S., check which states have the lowest risk for spreading the virus based on current statistics. The CDC’s website keeps an updated map of which states are considered pandemic “hotspots,” to help you plan your trip.

Packing Tips

When packing your luggage, make sure to bring along plenty of hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes (if they’re available), and face masks. Make sure that you and other passengers wear masks whenever you make a pit stop for fuel or to use the restroom, and maintain a 6-foot distance from other people you encounter. Use hand sanitizer and wash your hands frequently during the journey. Also remember to wipe down the gas pump surfaces before pumping gas.

Food and Accommodations

It’s a good idea to pack your own drinks and food, to minimize the stops you’ll make along the way. For longer trips, it might be impossible to pack every meal you and your loved ones will eat. Opt for take-out instead of dine-in at restaurants. Another strategy is to choose a hotel or rental with a fridge and kitchen area so you can prepare home-cooked food.

Remember to contact us at West Point Buick GMC if you need a safe new vehicle to transport you on your upcoming road trip.

Fall Car Maintenance Tips in Houston, TX

Fall car maintenance tips - West Point Buick GMC - Houston, TX

Getting ready for fall typically means pulling out scarves and jackets and sipping on pumpkin lattes. In order to get to your favorite coffeehouse or favorite tree-lined hiking trail, you need a reliable car. Make sure your car is ready to embrace all your fall adventures with the following fall car maintenance tips.

Battery Check

The change in season is a good reminder to check the charge of your car battery. It’s just endured a strenuous summer with high temperatures. It may not have the strength to carry you through the demands of a wet and windy fall. Inspect that the battery and cables are free from corrosion, too.

Lights Check

The sun will set earlier in fall than in summer increasing the amount of time you’re driving in the dark. The only way to cut through the dusk and darkness is with properly working headlights. Now is the time to investigate if your headlights, brake lights, turn signals and hazard lights are clear and bright. If one of your lights is fading, its best repair its partner at the same time.

Tires Check

Hot pavement and extreme temperatures help deteriorate the quality of your car’s tires. Check that your car’s tires have a healthy amount of tread, are inflated to the car’s recommended psi and aren’t showing any signs of damage like bulging, tears or uneven wear.

The experts at our service department are ready to assist you with all your fall car care. Contact West Point Buick GMC in Houston, Texas, to schedule a service appointment.

All-New 2021 GMC Yukon Sees Big Upgrade to Max Towing Capacity

2021 GMC Yukon max towing capacity upgrade - West Point Buick GMC - Houston, TX

The all-new GMC Yukon is shaping up to be one of the most exciting SUVs of the year, with its massive increase in cargo space, innovative features like Hurricane Turn, and improved fuel economy. Now, we also know that it’s going to get an upgrade to max towing capacity — a big one.

Major Improvements

According to a report by The Car Connection’s Richard Duffer, max towing capacity is up by more than 20 percent in both the Yukon and the Yukon XL. The 5.3-liter V8 gasoline engine is expected to have a rear-wheel-drive rating of 7,900 pounds in the standard model, and 7,800 pounds in the XL. That marks an increase of 1,400 pounds for the former, and 1,500 pounds for the latter.

Incredibly, those figures were calculated without the Yukon’s upgraded trailering package. If you want to maximize your power, you can pull up to 8,400 pounds in both models with the 5.3-liter V8.

More Efficient Power

If you like your strength with a side of efficiency, the Yukon has you covered. According to Duffer, the 5.3-liter V8 also gives the SUV a boost of 1 mpg over the 2020 edition.

Stay tuned to the West Point Buick GMC blog for more information on the launch of the hotly-anticipated 2021 GMC Yukon. Or, if you can’t wait for a great new SUV, contact us for details on the 2020 models on our lot.

GM Makes COVID-19 Face Masks for Frontline Workers

In late March, GM announced that it would start producing face masks for frontline workers helping curb the spread of COVID-19. According to Peter Thom, GM vice president of Global Manufacturing Engineering, it was simply the manufacturer’s way to help address the nationwide shortage of face masks. “Working around the clock, our team rallied with incredible passion and focus to come up with a plan to produce masks that will help protect the women and men on the front lines of this crisis.”

Production in Warren

Face mask production launched on March 20 at the Warren, Michigan facility. Seven days later, the first mask rolled off the assembly line. The GM team then accelerated production with a goal of delivering 20,000 masks on April 8.

Per the company’s website, it’s estimated that the Warren facility has the capacity to produce up to 50,000 masks a day. This translates to approximately 1.5 million masks made per month.

Safety is the Goal

GM’s ultimate goal is to provide as many masks to frontline workers as possible, as CNBC’s Michael Wayland confirms. “By making available GM’s production processes to our global supply base, we hope to facilitate other companies’ efforts to bring more materials, more equipment and ultimately more facemasks to the community,” said Shilpan Amin, GM vice president of Global Purchasing and Supply Chain.

Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas for Car Lovers Under $100

Valentine's Day gift ideas - West Point Buick GMC - Houston, TX

Valentine’s Day is the perfect time of year to show someone you really care, but it can sometimes be difficult to find something for car lovers. That’s why we’ve put together a list of Valentine’s Day gift ideas for car lovers, all of which are under $100. From car wax to high-tech gadgets, romance doesn’t have to revolve around chocolates and flowers.

  • Car wash kit or headlight restoration kit. Any type of kit will work, really. Some companies will sell you pre-built packages, but you can also make your own by getting car washing soap, carnauba wax, a sponge, chamois cloth, and tire cleaner. Headlight restoration kits are a little trickier to put together on your own, but 3M sells an affordable set.
  • Another smart gift is a diagnostic scan tool so your partner can troubleshoot car problems on their own. A good scan tool or code reader costs about $100, but it’ll be well worth it in the long run.
  • Does your love interest have a classic car that’s always outside? Consider a car cover. This is a simple gift, but — realistically — your love just can’t protect the paint like an Aerotech car cover can.
  • Even if neither of you is a mechanic, you can still find a great car-oriented gift, such as a jump starter. Most people have jumper cables, but not everyone knows how to use them. A jump starter doesn’t have immediate payoff, but your partner will love you the next time their battery dies.

The ultimate gift, of course, is an actual car. If you’re looking for the perfect car to give to your Valentine, head over to West Point Buick GMC, where you’ll be able to find the best ride for your significant other.

GM Adds In-Vehicle Alexa App

This year, General Motors has plans to add everyone’s favorite electronic assistant, Alexa, to the GM lineup. The in-vehicle Alexa app will be available during the first half of this year on 2018 and newer vehicle with compatible technology.

Being able to use the same voice services in your home and in your car can makes things a little bit easier. With Alexa in your car, you will have access to tens of thousands of Alexa Skills. You would be able to access your smart home devices and do some Amazon shopping.

In addition to those standard Alexa features, GM will add a few unique in-car capabilities. For example, you will be able to use Alexa to interact with your navigation system to get directions. You could also ask Alexa to play music from streaming services or call people from your phone contact list.

“Customers already love using Alexa at home, and soon they can bring her with them on the go, whether they’re looking for a new car or own a compatible [GM] vehicle already on the road,” added Ned Curic, VP of Alexa Auto at Amazon. “We’re thrilled to be working with GM to help their customers stay more connected, more entertained, and more productive.”
