Be a Better Driver in 2021 with 3 New Year’s Resolutions

Driving New Year's Resolutions - West Point Buick GMC - Houston, TX

It’s the start of a new year, and that means you have the opportunity for a fresh start. Taking up a New Year’s resolution is a great idea to get you started — especially if you choose resolutions geared toward making you a safer driver. Pledging to take some simple steps in 2021 can help to ensure your safety and focus behind the wheel all year long.

Don’t Drive Distracted

This shouldgo without saying, but it absolutely bears repeating: Do not text and drive. Using your phone while you drive reduces your reaction time and makes you more vulnerable to a collision. Modern vehicles — like the great new Buick and GMC lineups you’ll find at West Point Buick GMC — offer hands-free systems that let you make calls and send messages without having to take your eyes off the road.

Give Yourself Time

If you feel like you drive over the speed limit more often than not, you may want to look at your routine. Speeding could be a condition of leaving your home too late and not giving yourself proper time to get to work, school, or whatever appointment you have. Make 2021 the year where you start leaving five minutes earlier than normal. If you get where you’re going quicker, you can take a few extra minutes to decompress in the cozy comfort of a new Buick or GMC vehicle.

Take Care of Your Vehicle

A healthy vehicle is a happy and reliable vehicle. Following your recommended service and maintenance schedule means your ride will be better equipped to stay on the road with you all 2021 long. It’s also important to act whenever you notice something off, like brakes squealing or a light appearing on your dashboard. Whatever your needs may be, the service experts at West Point Buick GMC are here to help you in the new year.

If your New Year’s resolution for 2021 includes being a better driver, why not incentivize yourself? Check out the great selection of new, pre-owned, and certified pre-owned vehicles available at West Point Buick GMC in Houston, Texas. If you start off the year with a fresh new ride, you’ll be more inclined to take steps to improve your driving habits.

Buick Teams Up with Hello Sunshine for Storytelling Initiative

Buick & Hello Sunshine Partner - West Point Buick GMC - Houston, TX

Buick recently announced an industry-first partnership with media company Hello Sunshine. This team-up will see Buick drivers given access to a specially curated selection of audiobooks, podcasts, and more.

Founded by actress and activist Reese Witherspoon, Hello Sunshine is a company that shares and celebrates women-centric stories around the world. Witherspoon’s popular “Reese’s Book Club” is a collection of books and stories that focus on women and women’s issues. Thanks to its partnership with Buick, Hello Sunshine will now be able to share those stories via integration into the latest Buick vehicles.

Reese’s Book Club will be able to be accessed through an in-vehicle touch screen, giving drivers access to each of the podcasts and audiobooks included in the club.

With nearly 55 percent of Buick drivers being women, the automaker is looking to build on that base and find more ways to appeal to female vehicle buyers. “Hello Sunshine shines a light on women, creating and telling stories that put women at the center, and that’s something Buick wants to be a part of,” said Buick’s advertising and media operations manager, Kate Hrabovsky. “As more women are making vehicle-buying decisions, we want to be thinking creatively about how to offer more driving experiences tailored for them.”

Hello Sunshine’s integrated app is currently available in the 2021 Buick Encore GX, with more vehicles set to receive the feature in 2021. Test drive the new Encore GX and other impressive vehicles at West Point Buick GMC in Houston, Texas, today.

Buick and Amazon Alexa - West Point Buick GMC - Houston, TX

A number of Buick models come with a built-in Amazon Alexa feature, which conveniently brings Alexa capabilities on the road. Recently, Buick and Amazon expanded their partnership by teaming up on a new ad campaign.

A Match Made In Heaven

From late August to mid-September, Buick and Amazon ran advertisements detailing their collaboration on streaming services, broadcast TV, online video sites and social media platforms. Buick and Amazon elected to have more lighthearted and enjoyable ads to show that they are fun brands.

Buick Advertising/Media Operations Manager Kate Hrabovsky said in a recent interview with Marketing Daily, “Getting people to think differently about Buick is a motivation behind everything we do. We are a brand that’s not afraid to take risks and have some fun.”

Alexa Knows Buick

In addition, an Amazon-dedicated virtual showroom gave drivers the chance to better familiarize themselves with the brands. Buick was also the first automaker to receive a custom utterance for Alexa. By simply saying, “Alexa, tell me about Buick SUVs,” you can learn more about the vehicles in the Buick lineup, including the new Alexa-compatible 2021 Envision.

Buick and Amazon intend to continue working together going forward. If you’d like to learn more about how Amazon Alexa currently enhances Buick vehicles or about other Buick technologies, don’t hesitate to give us a call at West Point Buick GMC in Houston, Texas.

How to Road Trip Safely During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Road Trip Safetly During COVID-19 Pandemic - West Point Buick GMC - Houston, TX

Road trips are a great way to escape the daily grind while recharging your mind and spirit. Enjoy the getaway you deserve while keeping your friends and family healthy with these simple strategies to road trip safely during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Go with a Vehicle

Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, each type of transportation has its own health risks, depending on how many people you’re traveling with and how many strangers and places you’re exposed to during the trip. But traveling by car is one of the safer options to pick compared with higher exposure options like bus or plane travel.

Pick a Smart Destination

If traveling within the U.S., check which states have the lowest risk for spreading the virus based on current statistics. The CDC’s website keeps an updated map of which states are considered pandemic “hotspots,” to help you plan your trip.

Packing Tips

When packing your luggage, make sure to bring along plenty of hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes (if they’re available), and face masks. Make sure that you and other passengers wear masks whenever you make a pit stop for fuel or to use the restroom, and maintain a 6-foot distance from other people you encounter. Use hand sanitizer and wash your hands frequently during the journey. Also remember to wipe down the gas pump surfaces before pumping gas.

Food and Accommodations

It’s a good idea to pack your own drinks and food, to minimize the stops you’ll make along the way. For longer trips, it might be impossible to pack every meal you and your loved ones will eat. Opt for take-out instead of dine-in at restaurants. Another strategy is to choose a hotel or rental with a fridge and kitchen area so you can prepare home-cooked food.

Remember to contact us at West Point Buick GMC if you need a safe new vehicle to transport you on your upcoming road trip.

Fall Car Maintenance Tips in Houston, TX

Fall car maintenance tips - West Point Buick GMC - Houston, TX

Getting ready for fall typically means pulling out scarves and jackets and sipping on pumpkin lattes. In order to get to your favorite coffeehouse or favorite tree-lined hiking trail, you need a reliable car. Make sure your car is ready to embrace all your fall adventures with the following fall car maintenance tips.

Battery Check

The change in season is a good reminder to check the charge of your car battery. It’s just endured a strenuous summer with high temperatures. It may not have the strength to carry you through the demands of a wet and windy fall. Inspect that the battery and cables are free from corrosion, too.

Lights Check

The sun will set earlier in fall than in summer increasing the amount of time you’re driving in the dark. The only way to cut through the dusk and darkness is with properly working headlights. Now is the time to investigate if your headlights, brake lights, turn signals and hazard lights are clear and bright. If one of your lights is fading, its best repair its partner at the same time.

Tires Check

Hot pavement and extreme temperatures help deteriorate the quality of your car’s tires. Check that your car’s tires have a healthy amount of tread, are inflated to the car’s recommended psi and aren’t showing any signs of damage like bulging, tears or uneven wear.

The experts at our service department are ready to assist you with all your fall car care. Contact West Point Buick GMC in Houston, Texas, to schedule a service appointment.

All-New 2021 GMC Yukon Sees Big Upgrade to Max Towing Capacity

2021 GMC Yukon max towing capacity upgrade - West Point Buick GMC - Houston, TX

The all-new GMC Yukon is shaping up to be one of the most exciting SUVs of the year, with its massive increase in cargo space, innovative features like Hurricane Turn, and improved fuel economy. Now, we also know that it’s going to get an upgrade to max towing capacity — a big one.

Major Improvements

According to a report by The Car Connection’s Richard Duffer, max towing capacity is up by more than 20 percent in both the Yukon and the Yukon XL. The 5.3-liter V8 gasoline engine is expected to have a rear-wheel-drive rating of 7,900 pounds in the standard model, and 7,800 pounds in the XL. That marks an increase of 1,400 pounds for the former, and 1,500 pounds for the latter.

Incredibly, those figures were calculated without the Yukon’s upgraded trailering package. If you want to maximize your power, you can pull up to 8,400 pounds in both models with the 5.3-liter V8.

More Efficient Power

If you like your strength with a side of efficiency, the Yukon has you covered. According to Duffer, the 5.3-liter V8 also gives the SUV a boost of 1 mpg over the 2020 edition.

Stay tuned to the West Point Buick GMC blog for more information on the launch of the hotly-anticipated 2021 GMC Yukon. Or, if you can’t wait for a great new SUV, contact us for details on the 2020 models on our lot.

GM Makes COVID-19 Face Masks for Frontline Workers

In late March, GM announced that it would start producing face masks for frontline workers helping curb the spread of COVID-19. According to Peter Thom, GM vice president of Global Manufacturing Engineering, it was simply the manufacturer’s way to help address the nationwide shortage of face masks. “Working around the clock, our team rallied with incredible passion and focus to come up with a plan to produce masks that will help protect the women and men on the front lines of this crisis.”

Production in Warren

Face mask production launched on March 20 at the Warren, Michigan facility. Seven days later, the first mask rolled off the assembly line. The GM team then accelerated production with a goal of delivering 20,000 masks on April 8.

Per the company’s website, it’s estimated that the Warren facility has the capacity to produce up to 50,000 masks a day. This translates to approximately 1.5 million masks made per month.

Safety is the Goal

GM’s ultimate goal is to provide as many masks to frontline workers as possible, as CNBC’s Michael Wayland confirms. “By making available GM’s production processes to our global supply base, we hope to facilitate other companies’ efforts to bring more materials, more equipment and ultimately more facemasks to the community,” said Shilpan Amin, GM vice president of Global Purchasing and Supply Chain.
